What it means when your domain is propagating

Understand what it means when a domain is propagating, why it happens and how to tell whether the DNS change is already being applied in different networks.

Published: 28/06/2026Updated: 28/06/2026

Introduction

When a domain is propagating, it means the DNS changes are still being updated across different networks and internet servers.

This happens when you register a new domain or change records such as NS, A, CNAME, MX or TXT.

Why it happens

DNS servers use cache to answer queries more quickly. That cache is not refreshed everywhere at the same time, so during the transition period different networks may show different results.

Conclusion

When a domain is propagating, it does not automatically mean something is wrong. Most of the time it only means the DNS change has not fully spread yet across all networks.
