IRTP Transfer Lock enabled — what does it mean?

The Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy (IRTP) defines the process for transferring domain names between providers, including protections against unauthorized changes to your domain. When you make significant changes to a domain name, you may be asked to complete an email verification to confirm the changes. A lock is placed on the domain to prevent further modifications until the change is confirmed.

What changes could trigger an IRTP Lock?

  • Registering a new domain.
  • Changing the name, organization, or address in the domain’s WHOIS contacts.
  • Transferring a domain to a new provider.

Will the IRTP Lock affect my website or email?

The IRTP Lock will not affect your website or email service; both will continue to work normally.

The IRTP Lock prevents the following actions:

  1. Transferring the domain to another provider: During the period the lock is active, you won’t be able to transfer the domain to a different provider.
  2. Changing the domain’s contact information (name, organization, address, etc.): You won’t be able to make changes to the contact information associated with the domain while the lock is in effect.
  3. Making significant changes to the domain’s configuration: Any major change to the domain’s configuration, such as DNS settings or other technical parameters, may be restricted while the lock is active.

It’s important to keep in mind that the IRTP Lock is implemented to protect the domain against unauthorized changes during certain processes, such as transferring it to another provider.

How long does the IRTP Lock last?

The IRTP Lock generally lasts 60 days.

Should I opt out of the Transfer Lock?

When you change a domain’s WHOIS contact details, you’ll have the option to opt out of applying the Transfer Lock. You can select this option if you don’t want the lock applied, which can be useful if you plan to transfer the domain to another provider within the next 60 days.

How does the IRTP Transfer Lock relate to the Registrar Lock option?

The Registrar Lock option in your miHosting account allows you to prevent a domain from being transferred to another provider. The Registrar Lock must be removed before transferring a domain. The Registrar Lock can be enabled and disabled at any time.

The IRTP Lock serves a similar function, but differs in that it is applied automatically when certain significant changes are made to the domain.

Can miHosting remove the IRTP Lock from my domain?

No. Unfortunately, if the IRTP Lock is applied, we cannot override or remove it early.
