Set up email in Outlook Express
Guide to setting up an email account in Outlook Express with POP3, IMAP and SMTP.
Introduction
Outlook Express is an old mail program. Some people still use it on legacy computers, but it is no longer the best option because of compatibility and security limitations.
If you still need it, these are the basic details to use. When possible, prefer a modern client such as Thunderbird, current Outlook or webmail.
Details you need
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
user@yourdomain.com | |
| Username | Your full email address |
| Password | Mailbox password |
| IMAP server | mail.yourdomain.com |
| IMAP port | 993 with SSL/TLS |
| POP3 server | mail.yourdomain.com |
| POP3 port | 995 with SSL/TLS |
| SMTP server | mail.yourdomain.com |
| SMTP port | 465 with SSL/TLS or 587 with STARTTLS |
Setup steps
- Open Outlook Express.
- Go to Tools and then Accounts.
- Click Add and choose Mail.
- Enter the display name.
- Enter your full email address.
- Choose IMAP or POP3.
- Enter
mail.yourdomain.comfor both incoming and outgoing server. - Use your full email address as the account name.
- Enter the password and finish the wizard.
Conclusion
Outlook Express can still be configured with your domain email details, but because it is old software it may fail with modern certificates or encryption. Use mail.yourdomain.com, SMTP authentication and secure ports whenever the program allows it.
