I can receive email but not send it: fix
Fix outgoing email by reviewing SMTP, authentication, ports, password and possible temporary account blocks.
Introduction
Receiving and sending email are different processes. That is why an account can work perfectly for downloading messages and still fail when trying to send.
In most cases, the problem is related to SMTP, authentication, the outgoing port, the password or a temporary sending block.
The first things to check
1. The SMTP server
Make sure the outgoing server is the right one for your account.
2. Authentication
Outgoing server authentication must be enabled in most email clients.
3. The full username
Normally you should use the full email address as the username.
4. The current password
If you changed the password in the panel but not in the program, sending will fail.
5. Port and encryption
Check whether you are using the correct port and the matching SSL or TLS setting.
Other possible causes
- mailbox temporarily suspended
- sending or bounce limits reached
outgoing mail hold- antivirus or firewall blocking the port
- web application using an invalid sender
How to isolate the issue
- Try sending from webmail.
- If webmail works, review your local mail program.
- If it also fails in webmail, review the account or server side.
- Keep any bounce or exact error text.
Useful tips
-
Do not change too many things at once
Modify one setting and test it so you know what was actually wrong.
-
Check whether it only fails on one network
Sometimes the problem comes from the local connection or firewall.
-
Review whether the account was blocked for security
If there was abuse or spam, sending may be temporarily held.
Frequently asked questions
If I can receive, does that mean the account is fine
Not completely. It only means incoming mail works. Outgoing mail depends on other settings.
Webmail sends but my program does not
That usually confirms the problem is in the local mail client configuration.
Can SMTP fail while IMAP works
Yes. They are different services.
Conclusion
If you can receive email but cannot send it, the first place to look is almost always the SMTP setup and authentication.
With those values adjusted correctly, outgoing email usually starts working again quickly.
